2 years ago I was teaching a 1st/2nd grade ELL combination class. Everyday I would take my kids outside on a bathroom break. While we are waiting, I would talk to my kids about stuff that's going on in their lives. I saw that one of my girls had really cute shoes on that day.
Me: Can we trade shoes for the day?!?!?!
Student: NO WAY! Mine won't fit you.
Me: BUMMER!
Student: What's a bummer?
Oh how I love that story.....

What's my age again?!?!?
This past week was my birthday and the kids remembered! Now, keep in mind they think I am 72. Without saying a word, they informed teachers and peers that I was turning 73 (yay, they can count up and retain information learned months ago)! Again, they are still in shock that I am, "so old". They still believe it, still think I look good for my age, and STILL tell me I am older than their grandmas!!!
Vocabulary Word
Each week, my kids learn about 1 math and 1 language arts academic vocabulary word. Last week one of my students asked me (keep in mind these are 3rd grade English language learners) if our reading vocabulary word could be 'concur'. I was shocked! I asked him where he learned that word...he said, "my brother". I just had to ask if he knew what that meant and HE DID!!!!!! So of course, what was our word the next week? CONCUR...and he taught it to the class :)
